Looking after physical and mental well-being isn’t just something unique to young people.
While images of staying fit and in-shape might be something that is often associated with a younger generation, prioritising self-care and remaining active has a tonne of benefits and is equally as beneficial for those a little older.
It’s important to remember too that wellness isn’t just about exercise—it’s about creating a balanced lifestyle that activates both body and mind.
Wondering how to stay fit and feel your best? Take a look at the following wellness activities that can help you stay fit, relaxed, and feeling your best after 60 (or, in fact, any age!).
Swimming, or walking in water
Swimming is one of the best exercises to help engage a whole heap of muscle groups. It’s low-impact, meaning it’s easy on the joints, making it ideal for those dealing with arthritis or general stiffness.
It’s great for cardiovascular health and maintaining flexibility too. Swimming also promotes circulation, which can help with issues like swollen ankles and poor blood flow. Not a particularly keen or proficient swimmer?
Even walking up and down in the water is proven to be great for your flexibility and range of motion!
Sauna
A sauna can work wonders for relaxing muscles, increasing circulation, and easing discomfort. It’s also exceptionally therapeutic and is often a great place to socialise with others.
The heat encourages the body to release tension and toxins through sweating, leaving you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. Studies have shown that sauna usage has also been linked to a reduced chance of cardiovascular-related health problems.
Just remember to stay hydrated with water - it goes without saying, it will be hot!
Steam Room
If you fancy a slight change from a sauna then a steam room could be for you. For those that suffer from respiratory issues such as asthma or congestion, a steam room can be incredibly beneficial.
The warm, moist air helps open up airways, making it easier to breathe. Steam rooms also improve circulation and promote better skin health by opening pores and increasing hydration.
Yoga or Pilates
Yoga and Pilates are both classes we offer at Village.. It helps improve flexibility, balance, and posture which are all essential for preventing falls and maintaining mobility. They also encourage mindfulness and deep breathing, which can reduce stress and anxiety. So if you are ever feeling overwhelmed, you can leave that all at the door whilst you find that inner piece again.
Many classes are specifically designed for seniors, focusing on slow, controlled movements that build strength without strain. Although yoga is popular for all ages, it certainly does the trick when you just need to stretch those muscles!
Other cardiovascular activities
If you just aren’t feeling that run/ cycle outside or the 10k steps in the park- you could try doing it indoors. Walking, running, or cycling at the gym are fantastic options to maintain cardiovascular health and overall fitness. A brisk walk on the treadmill can help improve circulation, strengthen muscles, and boost endurance and still be easy on the joints. You can also change the incline and speed of the walk if you fancy making it tougher which is great for your cardiovascular health.
Cycling, whether on a stationary bike or in a spin class, provides a low-impact way to build strength in the legs while improving balance and coordination. The controlled gym environment also ensures safety, making these exercises accessible and beneficial at any age.
Wellness is the answer.
Wellness after 60 isn’t about pushing your body to the limit—it’s about nurturing it.
Focusing on low impact activities that still give you the benefits of working out are going to help you physically and mentally. Prioritising self care is so important at any age but especially as you are looking at retiring, instead of becoming bored, it’s time to find activities that boost your mental clarity and reduce stress.
Combining activities like swimming, yoga, walking, running, cycling, sauna, and steam room sessions can create a well-rounded routine that supports mobility, relaxation, and overall health.
So, whether you’re gliding through the pool, stretching into a yoga pose, pedalling at the gym, or simply unwinding in the warmth of a sauna, embrace wellness as a lifelong journey. Your body and mind will thank you later!
