BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO HYROX

Hyrox is a competitive fitness event combining running with functional exercises. Essentially, it’s a race consisting of 8 x 1km runs separated by 8 different functional fitness challenges. This article is going to dissect the “World Series of Fitness Racing” and give you the full low down so you’re well equipped to dust off those trainers and get prepping for the ultimate fitness challenge! 

Let’s dive right in, shall we?

WHO ARE HYROX?

HYROX was launched by two people named Christian Toetzke & Moritz Furste. The former being a two time olympic medallist in Hockey. Christian was at the forefront of launching the inaugural Hamburg Triathlon, so it’s pretty safe to say these two guys are fitness fanatics!

Hyrox events take place all over the world and are rather popular with endurance athletes and those that are bang into their crossfit. Participants are timed and whoever is fastest in their category (male, female, duos, teams etc) is crowned the champ, it’s literally as simple as that.

CAN ANYBODY TAKE PART?
Hyrox is certainly considered a challenging event but you don’t need to be a seasoned pro to compete. Hyrox themselves pride themselves on being inclusive and open up their events to athletes of all abilities (and disabilities, if you want to call it that!). So it’s open to everyone, however our Hyrox Sim Events will be open to anyone over the age of 18. 


One thing to consider is that you will require a bit more than stamina. Great, you’ll be able to complete the 1km runs with relative ease, but you’ll also need a level of strength to nail the sled pulls/pushes, agility to crunch it in the sandbag lunges & pure grit to get to the end of the gruelling farmers walk. But please don’t be embarrassed on your course times. Take as long as you need. Trust us, finishing the course is an achievement in itself. 


WHAT EQUIPMENT DO I NEED?
There’s not much you need to compete in a Hyrox event other than appropriate clothes and footwear, just as you would if you were to bust a move on the gym floor or work your stuff in a spin class. There are no specific clothing requirements, but please do consider these things will get rather hot and humid, not to mention the amount of exercise you’ll be doing!


WILL VILLAGE BE HOSTING ANY HYROX EVENTS? 
Easy answer to this… Yes. We won’t be running the whole shabam, there’s far too many participants and spectators for us to handle. But we do have three Hyrox Sim events nailed down. Ashton in November 2024, Solihull in January 2025 & Watford in February 2025. Want to know more and register? Let’s go!

WILL COMPETING IN HYROX EVENTS HELP ME LOSE WEIGHT?
Of course, to lose weight you need to find yourself in a calorie deficit. This means you need to be burning more calories than you are taking on. And given the nature of Hyrox events, and all the different movements you’ll be making, combining that with a calorie controlled diet will help you lose weight. WILL VILLAGE BE HOSTING ANY HYROX SPECIFIC TRAINING?
Again, the answer to this is a simple yes. The second we became proud partners of Hyrox we got to work on building killer classes to get you prepped as well as we could for any Hyrox event, whether that be a Hyrox Sim hosted by us or at one of Hyrox’s National Events. CAN HYROX CAUSE INJURY?
Any exercise can cause injury, especially if technique and form is off or incorrect. But we have fitness experts on hand in both Hyrox Training Classes & at our Hyrox Sim events to ensure your technique is to a tee to ensure ultimate safety and success.
